Colin Hansen has been working in acoustics and noise & vibration control for more than 30 years and has been an Academic Staff member at The University of Adelaide for more than 20 years. His PhD degree was awarded by The University of Adelaide in 1980 for his work on sound radiation from vibrating surfaces. Prior to his current academic appointment, which began in 1986, he spent seven years as a noise and vibration consultant in the USA (Bolt Beranek and Newman Inc.) and Australia. He is author of the texts, “Noise Control: from concept to application” and "Understanding Active Noise Cancellation" and co-author of three editions of the texts, "Engineering Noise Control" and "Active Control of Noise and Vibration". His current research interests include active noise and vibration control, ultrasonic treatment of water and agricultural products and underwater sound propagation. He has authored or co-authored over 100 papers in refereed journals and a similar number in conference proceedings. His active control research has led to the development of a low cost, robust electronic controller ideally suited to active noise and vibration control. The technology thus developed is now licensed by Causal Systems (of which Professor Hansen is a director) who are further developing and marketing the controller. He is a past President of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration.
