SATURDAY 22 JULY 2017

TOUR AND VISIT TO CAMBRIDGE

Delegates and Accompanying Persons are warmly invited to explore
the ancient university city of Cambridge, during a unique day’s visit
organised specially for ICSV24.

The day begins with a Cambridge Official Guide tour, which will take
in such sights as King’s College, one of the University’s best known
colleges, with its famous chapel.  Lunch will be served in Peterhouse,
the smallest and oldest of the colleges, where guests will enjoy a
hot fork-buffet in the splendour of the thirteenth-century hall.  In
the afternoon, as well as free time for exploring, guests will be taken
to Trinity College, where the tour will include a visit to the Great
Court Clock.

Cambridge is just a short 50-minute journey from London, with trains
departing regularly from King’s Cross.  The city has a wide range of
museums, hotels and restaurants, so guests may choose to arrive
on the Friday to make the most of their visit.

The total cost of the day, including all tours and lunch, is £55 per head.
This may be added to the Congress fee by selecting the Cambridge
Tour on registration, if you have already registered please contact the
ICSV Team to book. Places are limited to 60 people, and will be
allocated in order of registration.

TUESDAY 25 JULY 2017
WESTMINSTER SOUNDWALK
(THE SOUND WALK IS FULL)

8pm – 9.15pm

John Drever MIOA, Professor of Acoustic Ecology and Sound Art,
Goldsmiths, University of London, will lead a soundwalk through
Westminster. The walk will start and finish at the Park Plaza
Westminster Hotel.

We will adopt the classic method of soundwalking as espoused by
Murray Schafer and the World Soundscape Project in the early 70s.
The walk will function as a practical, embodied exercise, working in
counterpoint to the  academic discourse of the conference. And it
will engage the participants  in the immediate physical and acoustical
context of this iconic urban environment. To help us focus on listening,
the walk will be conducted in silence, with ample time for debriefing
and conferring at the end.  Such walks were originally devised as a
technique in ear cleansing for soundscape designers, but can also
be a valuable form of soundscapefield work, helping reveal pressing
issues for the urban pedestrian.
It places the individual listener in the centre of the process, reminding
us of the need to consider the human scale in effective spatial
planning, design, and management of the environment, and encourage
us to prioritise hearing-conscious design in our day-to-day
professional practice.

We will be exploring the salient characteristics of the Westminster
soundscape. Is it congruent with your expectation?

How are the sound sources modulated by this specific acoustic
architecture?

How much cognitive effort is required to listening attentively to the
acoustic environment - is it pedestrian friendly?

How does the actual prevailing acoustic environment shape the
pedestrian  experience of Westminster on a mid-week evening in July,
and how does this  experience impinge on our perception of the
soundscape?

IIAV MEMBERS EVENT ONLY
MILLENNIUM BRIDGE VISIT

IIAV members are warmly invited to the congress Members Event,
which is kindly sponsored by Taylor Devices Inc. and GERB
Schwingungsisolierungen GmbH.  These events are designed
especially for members, to provide an item of technical interest
followed by a meal.  For ICSV24, the event focusses on London's
Millennium Footbridge, which is well known for the vibration
problems it experienced on the opening day, and for the subsequent
successful mitigation.  The event will begin with a walk to the Bridge,
located approximately 30 minutes from the Park Plaza Hotel, taking
in the London Eye, Southbank and much else with iconic views.
At the Bridge, knowledgeable guides will give a historical and
technical account of the original problem and how it was fixed.
The evening will conclude with a meal at the Globe Theatre,
the reconstruction of Shakespeare’s London theatre.

IIAV members may reserve a place by selecting the Members
Event on registration.  Places are strictly limited and will be
allocated in order of registration.  Any Accompanying Person,
who accompanies an IIAV member, is also welcome at a cost
of £35 to cover the meal.
